Mitchell, Henry (1830-1902): hydrographer, entered the Coast Survey in 1849, he was assigned to make tide and current investigations in various harbours of the North Atlantic states. The results of his researches are embodied in numerous papers which appeared principally in the annual reports of the Coast Survey between the years 1854 and 1888. In these investigations his attention was directed particularly to the study of the tidal regime as related to hydrographic features, and he was successful in elucidating the complex of forces and factors at work in maintaining or changing shore lines and channels. His principal publications are: Tides and Tidal Phenomena (1868); "On the Reclamation of Tide Lands and Its Relation to Navigation" (Coast Survey Report, 1869) etc. Recognised as the leading hydrographer in America, he was drafted into the service of various government commissions. Pourtales, Louis Francois de (1823-1880): marine zoologist, studied under Agassiz, and in 1848 became associated with the United States Coast Survey. In 1864 he was put in charge of the tidal division, remaining with that until 1873. Sent 45 tidal letters, chiefly to Bache, Benham, Gordon and Stevens; he received 26 letters, chiefly from Bache and Cooper.
